Q&A: Help Choosing a Round Diamond For a Classic Solitaire Setiting With a $2,500 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi,

I’m looking for a round diamond of 0.75-1.0 carat to set in a solitaire engagement ring.

Naturally, I’ve been looking online at the usual suspects but there is an overwhelming supply of stones. My key priority is the cut, but the rest of the Cs is naturally also important. We live in Sweden so a retailer that can ship from within the E.U. is crucial.

Would you be able to help me find a nice stone with great sparkle?

Many thanks in advance!

I’d recommend checking out www.bluenile.com. They have an office in Dublin which makes service and shipping much easier. Plus, you don’t have to pay the import tax.

Before I start searching, I need to know a few details.

What metal do you want to use for the solitaire engagement ring?

Also, can you give me your ballpark figure (in SEK) of what you’re planning to spend?

We are targeting a classic “Tiffany style” six prong solitaire setting using platinum or 18 k white gold. The budget is set at 45,000-60,000 SEK in total for the setting and stone.

We would have a priority for a higher quality stone (more sparkle) over size as long as it makes sense price/performance wise.

OK, excellent!

I’d recommend 14K gold instead of 18K. It’s a bit cheaper and more durable. Also, I prefer WG over PT for sure. The reason is the huge disparity in upfront costs. As our article says, the WG has to be dipped every few years and the platinum needs to be polished as well because it scratches. So ultimately, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run.

Here is a ring I recommend:

The diamond would look absolutely bright and very brilliant, it’s s eye-clean and well cut.

What do you think?

Thanks for the help so far! Is there any particular reason why there is fluorescence in the stone and the color is an I? Will this still be perceived as a “white” stone against the white metal?

Understand it might not be your profession but what would typically be the cost of setting the stone into a solitaire ring if brought to an independent goldsmith?

The medium fluorescence is a bonus on an I color. It helps it look a tad whiter. I didn’t look for it, it just happened to be the best option I found.

An I color diamond won’t look any yellow. We even recommend a J for a solitaire setting in white gold and it always looks amazing.

The price for setting depends on a jeweler. And unfortunately, I have no experience with Swedish jewelers.

I see! I’m very ggratefulfor your help. To have something to choose between, would you possibly be able to recommend an even higher quality stone of a smaller size (0.75 ct) that is in the same price range or cheaper?
