Q&A: Help Choosing a Pear-Shaped Diamond With a $4,000 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi, I am currently looking for an engagement ring and I am hoping you can give me advice on the perfect ring for the best price!

My budget is approx. £3000 however with your advice, if I could find a beautiful ring that is slightly cheaper, that would be great!

I have been looking on Blue Nile and like pear, round and oval shaped diamonds. My girlfriend has short fingers and I read that the pear, oval or marquise shape diamond could help lengthen the appearance of her finger. At the moment, I have been focusing on the pear shaped diamond and have seen a number of 0.6ct D IF diamonds for ~£1800 and a 0.7ct E VVS1 diamond for £1900.

As for setting, I like the Petite Diamond, Petite Milgrain, Monique Lhuillier Jardin and Classic Pear Shaped rings. I have read slender, narrow-width bands create the illusion of length therefore I was wondering which of these you would think suitable?

I also read that you occasionally have unique single-use coupons available for readers who contact you. Do you have offers available at the moment?

I am looking forward to hearing back from you at this exciting time!

I believe that the choice of a shape of diamond and setting is mainly the matter of a personal taste. So I’d like to leave this decision up to you and your partner.

Here’s a diamond with the quality I’d recommend:

What do you think?

Thank you for the reply. Sorry it has taken me some time to get back to you but I was away on holiday.

I have been considering the shape of engagement ring I would like to purchase and have decided on the pear shape.

Unfortunately the diamond you recommended is now unavailable however I have reconsidered my budget and having read the advice page on your website regarding pear shape diamonds, I have found a nice diamond that, on paper, fulfills all of the characteristics that are essential to a good pear diamond. Please see the link below:

From the image on the website, I cannot see a significant bow tie in the diamond and think the edges look smooth and nicely rounded towards the point.

I would really appreciate if you could take a look and provide feedback on this particular diamond.

It’s nice to hear from you again.

The stone you found has great overall specifications. As you mentioned, the bow-tie is also none or a little. At the same time, I found a slightly less expensive option for you:

An H color stone is going to look colorless and it saves you money.

What do you think?

Thank you for the advice and recommending another diamond. I have, however, already purchased the one that I sent to you.

I am happy with the choice and looking forward to proposing in a couple of weeks!

I will definitely recommend the site to friends and family in the future.

The stone you found is fantastic and it surely was a great way to go.

Thank you for your kind words and please let me know how you like the stone once it arrives.
