Q&A: Help Choosing a 2.0 Ct. K Color Round Diamond from Brian Gavin

By Mike Fried,

Dear Diamond Pros,

My gf has fallen for this beautiful rose gold Brian Gavin setting [1] so I want to purchase the complete engagement ring. I am seeking a diamond between 2.2+5 and 2.60 carats but the pricing for these seems very high (25K – 50K). Can you recommend how I can lower the cost without sacrificing quality too much? For example, I didn’t want to go lower than a J color but do you think K color would be okay for a rose gold setting color? Your experience and insight on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

With BG diamonds, you can get a K color for sure. Their perfect cut guarantees a lot of fire and brilliance and the color will get less noticeable.

If you are OK with a slightly smaller diamond, I’d go with this one:

It would be a perfect fit to the setting you chose.
Let me know what you think.

Hi, thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate you going through the Brian Gavin site and finding a suitable diamond. I was looking at this particular diamond since it says “This Diamond is eye clean”:

When trying on rings though, my gf gravitated towards diamonds in the 2.25 to 2.65 carat range since she thought those large diamonds looked better on her finger. This particular setting only supports up to 2 carats so I’m assuming the setting will need to be customized.

Also, is pricing for Brian Gavin fair? Their diamond prices seem high. Do you have clients that purchase the setting from Brian Gavin but purchase the diamond elsewhere?

Looking at the inclusion in the middle of the diamond’s table, I don’t think it is eye-clean.

With Brian Gavin, you’re paying a premium for the added quality. Brian Gavin is known as one of the world’s experts when it comes to perfectly cut diamonds. BGD’s Signature diamonds are truly fantastic. They are all incredibly brilliant. If you care about this more than the actual size, they are the place to go.

If you want to get the largest diamond possible, then you can buy it in places like James Allen or Blue Nile. However, buying a setting and a diamond separately might be a bit tricky in terms of warranty. You would have talk to them about it first to make sure it’s worth it for you.

Hi, thank you again. I reached out to Brian Gavin and they provided me with the attached photo. I’m assuming the true brilliance and sparkle of the diamonds cannot be truly seen since it’s a photo but what are your thoughts between these 3?

From that angle, the inclusion on the table isn’t obviously visible. They all look good and looking at them next to each other, I’d still go for the K 2.005ct one.

Thank you again for your feedback. I have told Brian Gavin that I’m interested in pursuing the K 2.005 ct you recommended. However, they then mentioned this diamond for the same price but larger in size but a decrease in color to N. What are your thoughts on this diamond even though diamonds.pro ‘does not recommend diamonds in the N-R grade’.

We don’t recommend them (as you know), but if they say that it will look great in that setting you chose, then you can give it a try. The truth is that their diamonds are amazingly cut which helps the color to become less noticeable.

Hi! I placed an order with Brian Gavin using the diamond you recommended! I specified Diamonds.Pro as the referral.

Thank you for the update.

Let me know how it looks when you receive it.

Hi, the customer service at Brian Gavin has been dismal but I finally received my engagement ring only one day before I proposed! My gf loves the ring and the diamond is shiny, white and cut very well! I still haven’t received the glamour pictures but when I do I can send it your way.

Thanks again for everything.

I’m sorry to hear that it didn’t go smoothly, but I’m glad you both love the ring. That’s what matters.

Thank you for letting me know. Looking forward to the pictures.

Hi, attached are the 4 glamour shots Brian Gavin sent me. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the photos. I love the design! And the diamond looks perfect in it. From some angles in those photos, it seems a bit yellow which is normal for K diamonds. Plus, it’s something I like in rose/yellow gold settings. I’d be interested to see how it looks in real life. If you had a chance to take a picture of the ring at home, I’d appreciate that photo as well.

Thanks, Annie. What’s the best way to take a photo of the ring? Attached are some spontaneous pics. Note that we are most likely to get the ring resized as its kind of loose on her and you kind of see see the gap in the car photo.

Wow. The photo in the car is just perfect! And the diamond looks amazing in it. Thank you very much for those.
