Hi, I’m still new in my hunt for a diamond for an engagement ring and I’m looking for some help.
1. Budget for center stone: About $5,500 (but potentially just north of $6,000)
2. Platinum, I think
3. Style: 3 stone in platinum, I think (like this Blue Nile Classic Three-Stone Diamond Engagement Ring)
I’ve read (and been helped by) a bunch of articles on your site — thanks for sharing all the information you’ve learned. Any help you can provide on a stone will be appreciated.
1) When you say $5,500 for the center diamond, do you mean all three?

What do you think of this set? They are all superbly cut, eye-clean and great values. If you like them, please jump on them. You don’t need to buy right away, but at least contact James Allen and ask for a gemologist inspection. This is the busiest week of the year and if one of the diamonds sells, its not that easy to make up a good three-stone set.

The J color isn’t a problem? It’s not too low a grade? Obviously you’re the expert, but I just want to make sure.
What is a gemologist inspection? Do you recommend that I do that?

The J color is fine. JA allows you to request a gemologist inspections. I don’t think its necessary, but it will take a couple of days and they will put the diamonds on hold for you while its done. It gives you time to be comfortable with the decision.
