Q&A: Choosing a Round Diamond for a Two-Tone Pave Setting with Around $3500 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Budget: 3500 for diamond

Rose gold prongs on white gold setting

I was wondering if you had any suggestions on diamond colour. Will the rose gold prongs have any affect on the diamond coloration? Should I look for colour of clarity/size if this is ther case?

I think you should go with an I color diamond for that setting.

Would you like some recommendations?

Absolutely. I’ve been looking at the 0.8 karat and up true heart stones as I’ve read many places the cut is more important than the other C’s and the smaller size will still look bigger given the quality than a larger stone. Someone from James Allen did say that even a J colour would be suitable for that setting as the rose gold can tend to bring out the white in the diamond. Agree?

I disagree. Rose gold is fine with J, but not the pave diamonds. I’d stick with I+.

This is a great choice. Its eye-clean, bright and a great value. What do you think?

Is there any issue with the medium blue fluorescence? Otherwise I agree it is very eye clean and a reasonable price!

And how much does the table% and ratio affect the overall look of this diamond? I notice that the table is just a bit outside what I’ve read suggested and the ratio is only ‘good’ opposed to optimal. I just want to know that this will look amazing and sparkle compared to other store bought diamonds. I really appreciate your time.

I love 58/59% tables. I think the cut is great and medium fluorescence is a bonus for J color diamonds.

Just a couple more questions for you! I am also considering this setting.. https://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/mixed-metal/18k-white-gold-spring-blossom-six-prong-solitaire-engagement-ring-item-9148?a_aid=dmnd1357

It seems like this setting is meant more for larger diamond sizes than the pave by the sizes it can be set with. Do you have any opinion on whether pave and solitaire settings show the diamond better?

I think the setting is fine for that diamond.

Well, I guess diamonds can go fast on James Allen! I lost the one you previously suggested. I found this one however, https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.80-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-271472?a_aid=dmnd1357

It’s a J but I was leaning more towards the solitaire so wouldn’t need to worry about the colour of the side stones as much and it does have some fluorescence. What do you think of this one? Very reasonable priced and looks eye clean (to me).

This one is a winner as well. Yes, this is the season where things fly. Let me know how it looks when it arrives.
