Q&A: Choosing a Round Diamond for Tiffany Style Ring With Around $8k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Heard Mike on the Art of Charm podcast. The episode really stuck with me as a good resource for buying a ring.

Looking for a simple, eye clean “Tiffany” style round diamond ring in platinum. My girlfriend has a small finger so smaller rings sizes look better on her.

Here are my questions.
1 – How would you suggest getting her ring size without going to a jeweler.

2 – What is your grading provider?

3 – Can we have a call to go over any other questions about this?

I’ll be happy to help.
1) If she has a ring she wears all the time, you can measure it according to online ring sizers.

2) I’m not sure what you mean, but we recommend staying with GIA/AGS diamonds only. This way, you will make sure that you’re getting what’s written.

3) If you give me your ballpark budget for the ring, I can send you some links for the ring options. It will be easier this way as you have to see them online anyways.

Thanks!

Yes, GIA only. I was confused by reading something on the site that was talking about all the other various grading organizations.

Did my email include the ring I customized on the site? If not, I can try to resend.

If you can show me rings like the one I customized that to show what price range is for various grades, that would be great.

Do the diamonds generally come with the serial number that shows only under the jewelers eye piece tool?

Thanks.

I didn’t receive anything. You can try sending it again.

A lot of diamonds are laser inscribed, but not all of them. However, it’s always written in the cert.

This is what I had put together on the site. not sure about the setting size but overall this is where I’m looking.

Great, thanks.

If the diamond should be for the Tiffany classic setting look, then I’d go with a J+ diamond. Here are some options:
Blue Nile LD07861304
Blue Nile LD07873978

They both are well cut and will be very bright and brilliant. Ask BN for the actual photos so we are sure they are eye-clean but the clarity plots in the certs look great.

What do you think?

Thanks. I agree this looks like a great option. Can we look in the range of 1.25 – 1.5ct? My girlfriend has small fingers so I don’t want something that looks too big on her finger.

No problem:

How about similar diamonds with a color grade of H?

There is no reason for paying the extra for a higher color when you’re putting it into a solitaire setting. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/

The price jump will be significant. For example. a 1.4ct H color diamond will be around 9k.

Thanks for all your help!

My concern about color is the “eye clean” concept. I’d like it to be as colorless as possible without increasing the price significantly. Since I am going with a solitaire setting, I see your value recommendation of getting a diamond between H and J. I just want to make sure I’m keeping within the “eye clean” concept. Not going to low end with color.

I think I want to settle on a 1.25 or 1.4. Is there a reason that the diamonds you are recommending are all Blue Nile as opposed to James Allen?

Next I was thinking about settings. I want a slim ring size (~1.5mm) with 4 prongs. Are there disadvantages to the 4 vs. the 6 prong setting? I’m having trouble with James Allen’s site from work but I thought I saw one on there but could not find one on Blue Nile’s site. This is the closest I could find: Blue Nile Petite Solitaire Engagement Ring.

Thanks.

My reasoning for Blue Nile was that I found the best value there at the time. Anyhow, you are right that they don’t have any 1.5mm setting. The thinnest one I found was this 1.8mm one:

JA has it:

Here is also a diamond from them so you can compare:

Let me know.

Thank you again! Sorry for all the back and forth. Almost there.

I am going to go with Blue Nile. I prefer their unbranded settings. I was thinking platinum as opposed to white gold. Do you have any thoughts on this? I didn’t see any discussion on your site about the difference between the two. I understand that platinum wears less and will be “naturally” white.

Can you help me find a diamond on the Blue Nile site that is at least 1.5 ct with a medium blue fluorescence? I’d like to get the ring at 1.5 ct but am struggling to find a similar one to the one you recommended at 1.4ct. I like the idea of the medium blue fluorescence.

No problem.

I recommend white gold. The reason is the huge disparity in upfront costs. As our article says, the WG has to be dipped every few years and the platinum needs to be polished as well because it scratches. So ultimately, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run.

Here is the 1.50ct diamond from BN:
Blue Nile LD07489522

Thanks. What is the difference between medium fluorescence and medium blue fluorescence? Is it the same?

Yes, it is the same. There are multiple colors of fluorescence, but only blue is the good one. it’s also the most typical one. If it’s not said otherwise, it’s always blue.

I requested the pic from BN. See below. Would you mind taking a look to see if you notice anything? Also, can you briefly go through what you are looking for when you analyze this? I asked them to send me a similar diamond that had an earlier delivery date but they have not sent it yet. Then I may not have to bother you again.

Is that the 1.50ct diamond? If so, it looks great. I can’t find the crystal that is supposed to be close to the edge of the table which can mean that it’s unnoticeable.

I simply just go through the picture and look for any inclusion I can spot. Then I take a look at the cert and try finding the ones that are in the clarity plot.

I can’t find any of them which makes me think that it might not be the 1.50ct stone. Let me know.

Sorry, it’s the 1.25.

You mean the 1.27ct?
Blue Nile LD07266109

Correct.

I thought so. It looks great and according to the cert. It’s clean.

I also checked the other one you sent me and it also looks eye-clean. Both are great choices. If you prefer that one because of the earlier delivery, go with it.

Ordered it today from BN with the code. Thank you so much for answering all my questions!

Great to hear that. It was my pleasure helping you.
