Q&A: Choosing a Princess Cut Diamond from Brian Gavin for a Halo Setting With a $10k Total Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello,

I’d like to start off by thanking you both for this wonderful website. I actually have a lot of friends who have used your website, and ended up buying from Brian Gavin Diamonds. I actually love the brilliance and fire of BGD after seeing them in person. However, all my friends have bought H&A Rounds. My girlfriend wants a princess… which has made it a bit trickier so far. I’m hopeful the BGD princess’ are still great for their fire and brilliance. Any other suggestions you may have would be much appreciated!

I am looking for 1.0-1.5 carat ring to be placed in a halo/paved setting. My price limit is around under 10,000 for both the diamond and setting combined. Two options I found are below:

1) www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.358-i-vs2-princess-diamond-ags-104086010002&a_aid=y

2) www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.344-h-vs1-princess-diamond-ags-104084474002&a_aid=y

Overall, it’s hard for me to figure out whether 1000 dollars is worth going from I to H in color, and whether the extra central inclusions on the cheaper one is going to be a big problem visually.

I appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you may have!

Thank you for the kind words. I’m glad that your friends were happy with us and I hope you’re too.

BGD’s princess cuts are impressive as well. We’ve seen them in person and were amazed.

For a halo setting, go definitely with an H+ color diamond. “I” could look a bit yellow compared to the smaller stones in the setting. The 1.344ct diamond is gorgeous. And yes, I’d be afraid of the inclusion being visible on the I color diamond as well. I think you chose a perfect diamond.

Thank you for the assistance!

I ran across this diamond as well, and I think I read that Brian Gavin worked for this company before

Now, it’s also an I — but the lighting on the movie gives an impressive fire and brilliance that is harder to appreciate on BGD website. I assume this is just a website lighting issue? I’m hopeful that BGD princess cuts have equivalent fire as well.

Thanks!

I’m really sorry, but we will not comment on White Flash under any circumstances. We have had terrible personal experiences with them that a) make us feel no one should ever buy from them and b) precludes us from being objective about them.

The “sparkle” you in that picture is just how they make it look more appealing. I wouldn’t compare diamonds’ brilliance based on what you see on a screen.

Brian Gavin used to be a part owner of Whiteflash. Unfortunately for them, he, and all their credibility, are gone.

Enough said! I am going to go with the BGD 1.344 ct as originally planned! I may run some settings by you as well!

Thanks so much!!

No problem.

Send me anything you want my opinion on.

Unfortunately the 1.344 ct diamond was already bought, but they didn’t take it down online =(.

What would your thoughts be on this one? It’s a tad more expensive, but it is what it is…

There are some smaller inclusions I can see on the top border — not worried that the will be visible, but hopefully they won’t cause any chipping.

Thanks!

That is a gorgeous diamond. There is no need to worry about chipping. The inclusion would have to be in the corner, and there is only a very small cloud off the center on the table. That won’t affect anything.

Thank you!

I’ve placed that diamond on reserve. I’m struggling a bit with the setting options; there are 2 possibilities that I found on BGD, but one is clearly pricier than the other.

The Michelle Setting is definitely more expensive, but does seem to look nicer. Will a halo setting like this take away from the brilliance of the center diamond in your opinion? Also, I was leaning toward 18K white gold — how do you decipher the different metal types?

Thanks so much for everything so far!

Both settings are beautiful. The Jeff Cooper’s will look simpler, but elegant as well. The halo won’t distract from the center stone. Just go with the one you like better if you don’t mind the price difference. If you do, then I wouldn’t be worried to choose the less expensive one.

As for metals, I agree with white gold as well. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/platinum-vs-gold/

Thank you!

One last question about the halo setting — I’ve heard that smaller carat diamonds look better with halo settings. Is the 1.37 carat too big for the halo setting to look good in your opinion?

Thanks!

The reason you heard that smaller diamonds look good in halos is that the halo itself makes the center stone look larger. So who doesn’t have the money for a larger diamond, he can put it into a halo and make it look bigger. But that doesn’t mean that larger stones won’t look gorgeous in it as well. Don’t worry about it.
