I am getting a new ring for 40th anniversary. I have been looking at JA website and need help.
Here is what I want:
– 1.5 Emerald Cut Diamond/rectangular high quality
– simple 18ct yellow gold ring with white gold setting
Total Budget around $12,000.
Thank you and great info on your website!
I looked around and I like this combination for you:
www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/14k-yellow-gold-2mm-knife-edge-solitaire-engagement-ring-item-41484?a_aid=dmnd1357
I’d recommend 14k gold. It’s cheaper and more durable than 18k.
These diamonds are well cut and either of them will make a beautiful ring.
What do you think?
Thank you so much for your recommendations. We really like the 1.53 carat diamond you recommended. The only concern I have is the LW ratio is 1.33. Will this still have a rectangle appearance? I am planning on ordering from the James Allen website.
Thanks!
You’re welcome.
For emeralds, the L:W ratio we normally recommend is 1.25-1.49 (ideally 1.30-1.45). So I’d say that 1:33 fits these parameters perfectly. However, it depends entirely on you and your taste. All emeralds are usually slightly rectangular, so if you’d prefer something squarer, do you want to see some asscher cut diamonds?
Thanks for the quick response. I want the emerald cut diamond to be rectangular in shape and just wanted to be sure the diamond you recommend is. The 1.53 carat you recommend will probably be our first choice. Would you mind looking at it again before we purchase?
I am still looking at the rings. I only like wearing one ring as my engagement and wedding ring. I like classic and modern look and I will go with your recommendation to use 14ct yellow gold. Could you also tell me what type of mount to use? I am not sure about the knife edge setting. I also have old lady hands!!!!!!
We are hoping to order the ring in the next few days so we really appreciate your help.
Thanks!
No problem. Have a look at these:

I think the second one might suit you even more, what do you think?
As for the setting, it’s 100% a matter of personal taste and style. I think it’s best to leave it to you to pick out the style.
I did put the the 1.53 diamond on hold for 48 hours. Please see the note below about the setting. I didn’t care for the knife edge setting. Can you look at the following settings and give me your opinion? I like classic and modern.
SKU 1193Y14
SKU 17003Y14
SKU 11110Y14
I would like the ring to be 14 carat yellow gold but I think the mount would showcase the diamond more if it were white gold.
I value your advice!
Thanks!
……
Which of these two would you pick?
The 1.51 carat SKU 2804608 or 1.53 carat SKU 1128358?
Thanks!
I can’t see the price of the G-IF, but I kinda like the H-VS1 more. It’s more rectangular.
For some reason, I couldn’t find the first two settings, but I like the third one, it’s simple and will make the center diamond stand out. As for the metal, again, that’s entirely up to you. Personally, I love rose gold, but that’s just me.
I have the G-IF on hold so that is probably why you can’t see it. I have attached pics and the price is $8930. Is there much difference in shape between this one and the H-VS1? Does the price of $8930 seem too good to be true for a G-IF? My husband likes the higher rating but the final decision is mine.
Many thanks again!
If there was something odd about that G-IF diamond, I wouldn’t have sent it to you. They are equally well cut, I guess it’s just the matter of personal preferences which shape you prefer (that’s the only difference between the two of them). Both of them are excellent choices.
Thank you!
You’re welcome. Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.
Hi! This was my husbands favorite diamond that you found for us and they sold it to someone else even though I ordered it. Please help us again! Does this happen often?
Thanks!
……
Could you look at these two diamonds and give us your expert feedback. My husband wants at least VVS1 or IF but if you find VVS 2 will also consider. Size around 1.5carat -1.75 carat and would like to stay under $13000.
After all the work you have done for us I think we should have your name inscribed in the ring!
Thanks!
I’m very sorry to hear that! It’s very rare, but I understand that experiencing that must have been disappointing.
I absolutely love this diamond:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.72-carat-h-color-if-clarity-sku-556122?a_aid=dmnd1357
I wouldn’t go with the other one, it has a very strong black-windowing effect.
Thank you so much for your help and advice. I ordered the ring and the 1.72 diamond tonight.
Thanks so much for helping me through the process!
Best Always.
That’s great news! You’re welcome and it’s been a pleasure helping you.
I hope you love it when you receive it. If you could let me know how it looks when it arrives, I’d appreciate it.
Here are pictures of my ring from James Allen. I love love the diamond! The ring setting is a lot smaller than I thought it would be and I didn’t think the prongs would go down in a V. James Allen said I could return the setting without sending the diamond with it so I have been looking at our local jewelry stores. What prongs would you use for this diamond and what width band would look best? I do not want to add a band as I only like to wear one ring. I am so happy with the diamond and really appreciate your help!
Best Always.
The diamond looks beautiful, thank you for sharing the pictures with me!
As for the prongs, I’m sorry, but that’s not in our area of expertise. I recommend asking a jeweler about it. If you want, you can go with a wider band, the diamond is large enough and it’ll still look great (in my opinion).
