Q&A: Choosing Between Two Fancy Yellow Cushion Cut Diamonds with Around $4,500 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi,

I am looking for a Fancy Yellow coloured diamond and have come across limited information on them. So far I have shortlisted 2 fancy yellow coloured diamonds and I am sharing the links below:

I would highly appreciate your suggestion and recommendations.

They both look equally beautiful. It seems like the first diamond is a bit brighter, but that might also be the way the pictures were taken.
As for the cut, the first diamond with the table of 70% will look significantly larger than the other one. The measurements show that. On the other hand, the 1.01ct diamond will look more like a proper cushion cut (chubbier). The 1.07ct’s crown will be flatter but it shouldn’t affect the brilliance and scintillation.

Did you ask Leibish for videos? If they have them, they might help you see the true color and decide based on that.

What is the price of the 1.01ct one? It only says reserved. Did you put it on hold?

Thank you for your insights.

The price of the 1.01 ct diamond is $3,200. I agree with what you have explained. However, I am still a bit uncertain about which one should I go for. Which one would you personally gravitate more towards, a flatter top or a chubbier cushion cut?

You’re not going to like what I’m about to tell you but that’s usually up to everybody to decide. The only thing to pay attention to is the crown of the cushion being too flat – that can affect the brilliance. That’s best to view in a video that Leibish doesn’t seem to have. However, I’ve been recommending diamonds from Leibish for years and I haven’t seen an awfully cut cushion yet (with a flat crown).

Let’s say that both are equally pretty and brilliant, what do you seek more – size or price?

The 1.01ct will have a beautiful chubby look and the price is great.
The 1.07ct will look much bigger and will be flatter in the ring – not a bad thing, just a preference.

I appreciate your honest opinion. Thank you for that!

I do understand what you are saying and it makes perfect sense. For me actually a bigger looking diamond isn’t an important factor, the overall appearance and how it looks once worn is important. I do not necessarily endorse the notion of the bigger the diamond the better. I have petite hands and I believe anyway the 1.01 ct one may also appear big on my hands. Concerning the price, I wouldn’t like my boyfriend to unnecessarily indulge in something if there is not any significant difference.

Since you said that you are not after size and your hands are petite, I’d go for the 1ct one. As you said, a 1ct diamond is quite big anyway, so choosing the smaller one from the two will probably be the smarter decision. Plus, you’ll spend less money and you’ll get the true look of a cushion.

I will be going ahead with the 1.01 ct.

My sincere gratitude to you for extending your help and guidance.

Perfect.

It was my pleasure helping you.
