After reading through your informative site I wish to seek your help in purchasing an engagement ring, white gold, 6 prong “Tiffany” style setting. for my GF.
Diamond Size I am thinking of approx. 1.5 carat. wishing to get max sparkle within a realistic price.
Ring size is “I” (US 4.5 I think).
I’m assuming you want a round cut diamond, is that correct?
Can you give me the ballpark figure of what you’re looking to spend?
Yes the diamond is round.
Up to $13,000.
You can get below your budget for what you’re looking for. Look at the following two diamonds and two settings I found on Blue Nile:
Blue Nile LD11533906
Blue Nile LD11870212
Petite Nouveau Six-Prong Solitaire Engagement Ring
Nouveau Knife Edge Six Prong Solitaire Engagement Ring
Both diamonds are eye-clean and will look very bright and brilliant thanks to the perfect cut.
What do you think?
Have had a look at the information and am wondering what’s the difference from my perspective in regards to the two diamonds apart from the price. Clearly I can see the spec difference but would you imagine there being a visual difference between the two? Could an untrained person tell the difference for example?
Also in your view is platinum worth going to over the 14ct white gold?
No one could easily spot the difference between those two diamonds. They are almost identical. I’d definitely vote for the first one ($8,342).
As for the metal, I prefer WG over PT. The reason is the huge disparity in upfront costs. As our article says, the WG has to be dipped every few years and the platinum needs to be polished as well because it scratches. So ultimately, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run.
Today I placed an order with Blue Nile for the following as per your recommendation.

I had read a lot of information by the point I got in contact with you but would have overspent out of a lack of confidence to make a decision in what aspects are really relevant and what were less so.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and making the decision for me.
That’s wonderful news! I’m glad I could help to make it easier for you. I know how confusing and stressful this process can be.
