Q&A: Choosing a Round Diamond for a White Gold Ring With $7,500 Total Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello,

I wanted to ask for help choosing a diamond for an engagement ring. I have a few diamonds picked out, but I wanted to ask you if you think these are good choices, or if I should be looking at something else?

Currently, I am quoted by a friend of a friend, who is a middle man in the diamond market, for a 1.4 carat SI1, I color, Excellent cut diamond for $7300. I haven’t even seen it, but I am using that as my price point. So here are the rough parameters that I am looking for.

Price ~$7500
Finger Size: 3.5
Cut: Excellent
Color: I or better
Clarity: SI1? VS2?
Carat: Probably 1.2 is more reasonable

I have found 2 that I think are decent. Sadly I think this first one is already purchased. Do you have any other suggestions?
1.2 carat, H, SI1, Excellent cut for $6232 on Blue Nile (Blue Nile LD00063798)
1.2 carat, I, VS2, Excellent cut for $7041 on Blue Nile (Blue Nile LD09875379)

Thank you very much for your time.

The issue with the SI stone that is gone is the note in the cert: “Clarity grade is base on clouds that are not shown”. It means that there is a big cloud that significantly influences the appearance of the stone in a negative way. This comment is an issue on all SI stones.

The other diamond is beautiful with fantastic overall specs. Just one last question, what style of setting (solitaire, halo, pave or other) and metal (white or yellow gold) are you going to use? I want to make sure that this stone will look colorless.

Thank you very much for your help. The setting I am looking for is the Solitaire with 6 prongs in white gold Pretty much this link is the setting I want:

14K WHITE GOLD 2MM COMFORT FIT SOLITAIRE ENGAGEMENT RING (SIX PRONG

Thank you for the additional information.

Then the I color grade is fantastic. I also found this diamond:

Blue Nile LD10240940
It’s slightly bigger in size and less expensive.

What do think?

I think that diamond looks great. Do you have any more suggestions that I should take a look at?

I also found this one:

Blue Nile LD10207252
It’s slightly more expensive but also a little but bigger.

Let me know what you decide, please.

I still have not purchased a diamond, as life had gotten in the way again. I was hoping to ask for your help once again for looking for a diamond, as the ones you were mentioned last time I loved, but are now purchased.

No worries.

Here’s a great option that might suit you:

Blue Nile LD10641690
It’s beautifully cut.

Thoughts?

I apologize for bothering you yet again, as I have kept delaying and delaying purchasing a diamond. I thought the last one you sent me was beautiful. I finally had all my finances ready to buy it, and I missed the opportunity again for that last diamond that you sent me.

Could you recommend me one more?

Have a look at this one:

Blue Nile LD10827094

Thank you very much. I just purchased that diamond and a setting. Thank you for all of your help these past few months.

That’s fantastic news!

It was my pleasure. Please, let me know what you think of the ring once it arrives.
