Q&A: Choosing a Round Diamond for a Platinum Solitaire Setting with Around $6k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi! I’m looking to buy an engagement ring and my partner isn’t a huge wearer of jewelry so I’m thinking something simple.

My budget is £5000 so up to $7000, however, I’d also like a platinum ring so the budget for the diamond itself is more like $6000.

I’d like a 1 carat diamond ideally so would really value your suggestions (it’s a minefield and I feel at a disadvantage in high street shops and don’t feel they represent good value. I’ll leave all the colour, clarity ratings etc to you – I ‘just’ want a stunning looking diamond that looks great to the naked eye- sorry if it’s too generic!

Thank you so much in advance!

What shape diamond are you looking for? A round?

Also, should the setting be a simple solitaire style or should it have some additional diamonds on the sides?

Yes please, round and solitaire.

Thank you for the info.

Here is a diamond I would go with:
Blue Nile LD09556962

It’s eye-clean, well cut and will look very brilliant in a solitaire setting. The price is great for a 1ct diamond. I always search for SI+ diamonds to find the best bang for the buck. This time it happened that the best-priced eye-clean diamond was a VS1.

Let me know what you think.

It looks great, thanks for the suggestion.

I’ve been reading up this evening and wondered if you think a J colour diamond will look slightly yellow in a platinum setting? Or would the medium fluorescence negate that?
For a similar quality stone to the one you’ve picked out below – how much more would an I or even an H colour be?

I don’t recommend diamonds that look yellow when they shouldn’t. As we state in our color article (https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/), J is absolutely perfect for a WG/PT solitaire setting.

This is the best I color diamond I found:
Blue Nile LD09396944

It would still be within your budget.

Thanks for your help – I think I prefer the first one you suggested.

I agree that it’s an excellent diamond.

I will – I just need to find out her ring size now without giving the game away. She doesn’t wear any rings either so will have to ask friends.

Alright. I hope some of her friends will help.

I went to push the button today only to find that the diamond you first suggested is no longer available! Would you be so kind as to recommend a suitable alternative for me, please?

I found this amazing 0.96ct:
Blue Nile LD09857961

It’s just a tad smaller than the previous one, but you wouldn’t recognize the difference with your naked eye.

Call me stupid but I really want it to be 1.00 or above (sorry!).

Alright. What about this one then:
Blue Nile LD09042039

Thank you – I just compared all 3 side by side. Strangely, the first one is now showing as available again when I add to basket so think that’s the one after all.

The very first one, the J color was available when I checked, yes. I thought you wanted to keep the color on I and higher. If not, then the J diamond is a perfect choice, I agree.

I keep changing my mind but on reflection, I think the very first one is the one.

I like it a lot too.
