Q&A: Choosing a Round Cut Diamond for a Solitaire Setting With Up to $1,200 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Greetings,

I’m trying to buy an engagement ring with an 18k or 14k white gold setting, with a carat 0.40 or 0.50. I’ve been looking at Blue Nile but I feel overwhelmed with that amount of information on the web. I try to do it my self but I need advice and recommendations, my budget is between $1000-1200 US for the whole ring including the setting.

Also, I have been seen you guys offer promo codes, I’m wondering if you guys can send me one.

Thank you very much in advance, really appreciate your help.

Here is the code for $50 off of a purchase over 1k: [contact us for your own unique coupon code].

What shape diamond are you looking for? Are you going to use a solitaire setting or are there going to be some additional diamonds in the band?

I would like to use a round shape and a solitaire setting, my girlfriend told me she prefer solitaire and round because is classic.

Thank you for the info.

I looked around and I like the following options for you:

Blue Nile LD10187876
Blue Nile LD09955703
They are beautifully cut and either of them will be very brilliant.

What do you think?

They are very good diamonds both of them, my favorite is the second one, the one of 0.46 caract, Blue Nile LD09955703.

But I have a question about the size, will 0.46 carat be ok size for a solitaire style? What I mean is, won’t the diamond be too small for the setting?

I’m planning to go with this setting Classic Six-Prong Solitaire Engagement Ring so I don’t know if the diamond is going to look too small. Another question is for the setting you guys recommend 14k or 18k?

The last thing, is any James Allen similar diamonds to the one that you just send me?

It depends on your (and her) personal style. Some women have gotten tiny diamonds and been happy, while some readers considered a 3ct diamond “too small.” There is no norm.

I’d recommend 14k white gold. It’s cheaper and more durable than 18k.

Here’s a similar option from JA:

Just to inform you I chose the 0.46 carat Blue Nile diamond, I already purchased the diamond and the setting. I’m waiting for the ring to see how it looks, thanks for your advice and recommendations, really appreciate.

That’s great news! It was my pleasure helping you.
