Q&A: Choosing a Center Diamond for a Split Shank Pave White Gold Setting Within a $5,000 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi there,

Big fan of the site, I’ve read A LOT of the articles here.

I’m looking to buy an engagement ring for my girlfriend of 7 years.

This is the setting she likes:
14K WHITE GOLD CROSSOVER TRELLIS PAVE DIAMOND SPLIT SHANK ENGAGEMENT RING

My questions are:

1) I’d love to use the above setting from James Allen, however, it doesn’t seem to be able to be set with anything but a round diamond. Do you know if it would be possible to set it with a cushion cut diamond?

2) she likes the look of a cushion cut (square-ish but not princess cut), but what is the difference between Cushion and Radiant? Would the overall ring be significantly different if it were set with a cushion or a radiant or another similar cut?

3) could you please recommend a diamond? I trust your guys’ eyes to find a quality diamond over mine! My budget is $5,000.

Thank you so much! Hugely appreciate it!

I’m pleased to hear that you found our site so helpful.

I also found this setting:

14K WHITE GOLD SPLIT SHANK RIBBON ENGAGEMENT RING
It can be mounted with any shape. But I’m not sure if you’d like the under-halo.

You can also ask them if they can custom make the design you like for a cushion or radiant shape.

Yes, there is a difference in look between a radiant and cushion cut diamond. One last question before I start the search. The budget you mentioned is for the stone only or for the whole ring?

The $5,000 budget is for the whole ring.

Thank you.

Have a look at this cushion cut with the quality I’d recommend:

www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/1.02-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-3614470?a_aid=dmnd1357

and this radiant:

www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/radiant-cut/1.03-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-4308728?a_aid=dmnd1357

When you look at the corners, you can see the main difference in impression of the stones.

Let me know what you think of these.

Both these diamonds look great! I’m waiting to hear back from James Allen about the custom setting, thank you for finding a recommendation for both cuts, hopefully, James Allen can use one of the two.

Out of curiosity, would there be a reasonable dip in price for a cushion and radiant cut that is a little less than 1.0 carat? I imagine the overall look would be mostly the same with a diamond that is 0.95-0.99?

Sure, have a look at this cushion:

www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.96-carat-g-color-vs1-clarity-sku-4250788?a_aid=dmnd1357

The 0.95+ carat radiant stones were more expensive than the 1.03 carat I sent you.

I love it, thank you so much!

My pleasure. Please, keep me posted.

They say they can fit the diamond!

Just curious, I was wondering if you guys gave a coupon code for a slight discount at James Allen? Please let me know!

That’s fantastic news!

Unfortunately, we don’t have any coupon codes for purchases from JA at the moment. Try to ask them directly.

Just wanted to let you know I ordered the ring today with the 0.96 ct diamond you recommended!

That’s fantastic news!

Please, let me know how you like the ring once it arrives.
