Q&A: Choosing a 1.5-2 Ct. Fancy Yellow Cushion Diamond Within a $15k – $20k Budget

By Mike Fried,

You have a lot of great information here but I can’t find anything or much on Yellow diamonds so can you please advise for someone with a $15k – $20k budget? Her ring finger size is 4 3/4 (or near that) and therefore I’m not looking for anything larger than 1.5 – 2 carats so I want to put most my money towards color (Fancy Intense) and clarity (VVS1 or 2). What are your thoughts and does the same color range apply to yellow diamonds?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

What shape would you like?

Cushion.

Can you show me IF, Fancy Intense and 1.5 – 2 carats?? I’m being quoted $18k for 1.5 and platinum band…

Thanks.

Is it eye-clean and well cut? Do you have copy of the cert? If it is, I think that is a good deal.

Certification below…let me know what you think and thanks again for all your help.

Thanks.

And there is your answer. The cut is horrific on the diamond. It is far too deep.

Can you give me an appropriate cut for that amount of money??

The depth should not be higher than 70%. Not only does it sap the brilliance, it makes it look smaller.

Ok thanks and what price would you pay for this specific diamond?

I wouldn’t pay anything for it. Cut is the most important aspect of a diamond.
