Q&A: Choosing a 1 Ct. Round Diamond for a Ring and a Pair of total 1.5-2 Ct. Round Diamonds for Studs

By Mike Fried,

Hi there and thank you for a lot of eduactional pages for a novice like my self. Im currently looking at 2 things for my wife and need to know how much to spend.

1. White gold ring with round diamond around 1ct. She currently have a 0.8ct vvs2 E, round in ring where the diamond sits up in a “crown” and looks bigger than it is. She would like to have the diamond in the same setting but not to be worn together with the other one. What clarity and color should i chose and what price is to be expected?

2. Earstuds: around total ct of 1.5-2ct. round. I have read your article on the earstuds but not sure if the quality needs to be the same as the ring if they are worn together. the plan is that they are set in a simple 3 or 4 prong to make them appear a decent size, also what budget should plan to use.

My wife really likes the sparkle in the diamonds (like most wives i guest)

Thank you very much for your advice.

Normally we don’t recommend such high quality. But your wife will have the other diamond side by side to compare all the time. Was it GIA certified?

What is your ballpark budget?

Hi, my wife will not wear the rings on the same hand, however she will wear the Earstuds and the rings together.
I have to correct my self on the ring she currently has, i went home and checked (long time ago i gave it to her).
Its GIA certificated:
VS1
and G color

My budget is flexible but was hoping to get the stones around 12.000 combined. If this is not enough please just let me know then i will add to the budget. Thanks a lot.

Here would be my recommendation for the ring:

www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.01-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-227545?a_aid=dmnd1357

I love this diamond. The cut is superb, its eye-clean and the color will be fine compared to the other (I didn’t mean wearing them next to one another, but they would be compared often).

As for the earrings, I can make a recommendation for you for a pair of SI diamonds, but I’d want to wait till you are ready to pounce. Its the busiest season and diamonds are moving fast. I don’t want to do the work of matching them up only to find out one was sold and I need to start from scratch. It should cost about 5-5.5k (not including metal) for two 0.70cts.

What do you think?

Thank you very much. I will present it to my wife and see what she thinks. If it’s a hit we will get it ASAP.
Also I will check for the ear studs.
Thank you so much for your help. Extremely professional and friendly.
I will recommend your site to anybody that are considering buying diamonds.

If she likes that choice, let me know. If you are ready to pounce, I’d be happy to make recommendations for the studs.
