Q&A: Choosing a 1 Ct. Round Diamond for a 6-Prong Yellow Gold Solitaire

I’m interested in a 1 carat diamond to replace a lost diamond engagement ring. I’ve been quoted approx. £6k for a D colour stone VS2, very good cut, 0.8 carats but I’ve seen cheaper on Blue Nile. But I’m not sure about which one to go for. Diamond will be set in an 18k gold ring and £6k is about my budget for the whole ring. Can you possibly help I’m selecting the best possible looking diamond for the price?

I wasn’t looking for a D colour but that is what the local jeweller suggested. I have read your advice on your website and your advice seems to be that I could do as low as I colour as it is being set into an 18K gold ring and if it was an ideal cut etc.

I was looking on Blue Nile at the I colour diamonds with ideal cuts etc and there are so many to choose from I wasn’t sure which was the best out of the bunch.

It would be a solitaire – 6 prong with 18k gold.

They’re great prices – I had been looking at stones with excellent cut, excellent symmetry and no fluorescence.

Which would you suggest over the 2? I’m leaning towards the 1st one.

Sorry to be a pain but the other diamond has sold too now – I had an op Friday and by the time I went o buy it Sunday it had gone.

Thanks again for coming back to me so quickly. I didn’t hang around this time and ordered the alternative stone you suggested. One thing I noticed after I ordered in online, it has a GIA certificate dated over a year old. I assuming this is nothing to worry about.
