Q&A: Choosing a 1 Ct. Round Diamond for a 6-Prong Yellow Gold Solitaire

By Mike Fried,

I’m interested in a 1 carat diamond to replace a lost diamond engagement ring. I’ve been quoted approx. £6k for a D colour stone VS2, very good cut, 0.8 carats but I’ve seen cheaper on Blue Nile. But I’m not sure about which one to go for. Diamond will be set in an 18k gold ring and £6k is about my budget for the whole ring. Can you possibly help I’m selecting the best possible looking diamond for the price?

Many thanks.

I’d be happy to. One question before I start searching. Is the setting in solitaire style? I just want to make sure what would the best color be for it.

Also, is there any reason you’ve looked at a D color diamond?

Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.

I wasn’t looking for a D colour but that is what the local jeweller suggested. I have read your advice on your website and your advice seems to be that I could do as low as I colour as it is being set into an 18K gold ring and if it was an ideal cut etc.

I was looking on Blue Nile at the I colour diamonds with ideal cuts etc and there are so many to choose from I wasn’t sure which was the best out of the bunch.

Thanks in advance for your help.

What style would the setting be? A solitaire?

If so, then you can get even lower in color. Here are two I found on Blue Nile:
Blue Nile LD08365380
Blue Nile LD08181154

Let me know what you think. They both are eye-clean and very well cut.

It would be a solitaire – 6 prong with 18k gold.

They’re great prices – I had been looking at stones with excellent cut, excellent symmetry and no fluorescence.

Which would you suggest over the 2? I’m leaning towards the 1st one.

Thanks!

Symmetry and polish don’t have to be excellent. As long as you avoid the poor/fair grades, you’re fine.

A medium fluorescence is a bonus on that diamond. It helps it look a bit whiter.

Both are great stones. But I like the cut on the second one better. And because a cut is the most important aspect od the diamond that makes it brilliant, I’d go with that one.

But whichever one you choose, here is a $50 coupon code for you for the purchase: [contact us for your own unique coupon code]

Blue Nile gave them to us for our readers because they like the education we provide on our website.

Thanks, I’ll go for the 2nd one then. I’ll let you know when ordered so you can follow up.

Thanks again for your help.

Great! Let me know how it turns out.

I went to buy the diamond you suggested and it’s gone. Could you suggest any alternatives?

Many thanks!

I see the first one is available, which was your preferred choice to begin with. I’d say go for that.

Sorry to be a pain but the other diamond has sold too now – I had an op Friday and by the time I went o buy it Sunday it had gone.

Can you suggest some other good stones to purchase please.

I’ve had a little look myself and wondered about this one:
Blue Nile LD08408401

Again, thanks for your help.

No worries.

I still like the first choice of the two we discussed previously.

I also checked the one you found and that diamond looks amazing as well. But after a little bit of searching, this stone is my winner:
Blue Nile LD06647152

Thanks again for coming back to me so quickly. I didn’t hang around this time and ordered the alternative stone you suggested. One thing I noticed after I ordered in online, it has a GIA certificate dated over a year old. I assuming this is nothing to worry about.

Also, by the way, when checking with Blue Nile for a referral fee, I did use the discount code you gave me so that should allow you to track it and I also used this email address.

Once again, many thanks for your help.

Great to hear that! The date of the cert isn’t important. It doesn’t affect anything.

Thank you for letting me know about the email address.

Shoot me a message when the ring arrives. I’m interested to know how you like it.
