Q&A: Choosing a 1.3 to 1.4 Ct. Round Diamond for a White Gold Twisted Halo Setting

By Mike Fried,

Hello, I am looking for a round cut diamond in the 1.3 – 1.4 carat range. I am going to pair it with a twisted white gold with a halo. This, or something similar:

Is there a good thing to look for when trying to match the color of the diamond with a base like this that also is encrusted with diamonds?

I found this diamond after reading your Blue Nile review article and sifting through some of the comments. The diamond I linked, seemed to be decent value for the carat though I’m not sure you would consider it eye clean. Let me know if you think this is a good Diamond for me or if you have any other suggestions. Thank you.

I checked both of the links you sent me and I’ve got some concerns with the diamond. It is well cut, but strong fluorescence might be an issue there. On such a high color, it usually causes haziness.

Also, I’d go a little higher in color for that type of the setting. The smaller diamonds are too close to the center stone and might make the difference in color noticeable. H color would be where I’d go and it’ll look fantastic.

Here’s a diamond I love for you:

It is well cut, eye-clean and bright. It’ll be very brilliant in that setting you selected.

What do you think?

Thank you for the recommendation. I think the Diamond is beautiful, and thank you for clearing up the colour & fluorescence questions I had. Another question I have no is, if I want to be a setting from somewhere elsewhere what is the process of getting the diamond fitted to it? The issue I have is I haven’t been able to find a twisted ring that is encrusted that also has a halo I like from James Allen. With the one I linked, the halo is raised too high and I don’t like the texture on the halo I like the border that makes it looks smooth from the Blue Nile setting.

I like these two from Blue Nile more than the options from James Allen for example. Though they only offer 14k White gold and Platinum.

You’re welcome, I’m glad you like it.

Setting wise, there are two options for you: Either you can contact both of those companies (JA and BN), ask them what their terms would be for mounting the diamond for you and just go with whichever you find better for you, or you can get a diamond from Blue Nile as well.

The specs are great on this diamond and it would look fantastic in either of those settings you like.

Also, for metal, we always recommend white gold over platinum because of the huge disparity in upfront costs: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/platinum-vs-gold/. Both metals require upkeep every few years. WG needs to be dipped to retain its color and luster while PT needs to be cleaned and polished because it gets scratched and duller over time. So in the end, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run. And I’d recommend 14k white gold. It’s cheaper and more durable than 18k.

Let me know your thoughts.

I want to be able to stick with one retailer so I would consider the BN diamond on your recommendation, also the setting I like is only available in platinum. The 18k white gold version is not available for 5-6 weeks, so not much choice there.

If you want to wait for the setting to be ready, I’d be happy to find you a new diamond in 5-6 weeks (if that one I sent you ends up being sold by then).

If you wind up going with platinum, it’ll still make a beautiful ring. No worries. Let me know what you decide on in the end.

I ended up going with the BN diamond you recommended for me with this setting:

I didn’t want to wait the 6 weeks because I have a trip planned around that time and want to be prepared with the ring for then. Thanks for your help.

That’s great news! I hope you’ll love it when you receive it.

If you could let me know how it looks when it arrives, I’d appreciate it.
