Q&A: Choosing a 0.5 Ct. Round Diamond for a White Gold or Platinum Solitaire Setting Within a $1,400 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi. I am looking for a round brilliant, 0.5 carat, GIA cert, excellent cut diamond, medium fluorescence or less. I am open to advice on colour and clarity, depending on the retailer. But I was thinking H VS2 from Blue Nile. I have looked at SI1s from James Allen but I am in the UK so think Blue Nile might be safer. The ring will be white gold or platinum. Any advice will be much appreciated, as will a Blue Nile coupon code! My budget is £1400 for the diamond alone. Many thanks in advance.

I agree that Blue Nile seems to be the best option for you.

I’m happy to send you this unique coupon code: [contact us for your own unique coupon code]

Can you also tell me what style of setting (solitaire, halo, pave or other) you’re going to use? It also influences the search. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/

I am looking at solitaire settings.

Just to clarify with regards my budget, I would like an eye clean 0.5 carat that doesn’t compromise on sparkle. I don’t wish to pay for a higher grade colour or clarity than is necessary. The more under budget I can get it the better! Rather than spending the whole budget for the sake of it.

Do you think it’s a risk purchasing from blue Nile when I can’t see the diamond first? This is why I was thinking of going for a higher clarity grade.

Thank you for the information.

As you plan to mount the diamond into a solitaire setting, I suggest choosing a J color diamond. It’s going to look colorless. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/

Yes, it’s necessary to search for higher clarity grades. But you don’t have to worry about ordering from Blue Nile. We and our readers have had great experience with them.

Have a look at this diamond:
Blue Niile LD07731339

It’s very well cut and perfect for a solitaire setting.

What do you think?

That one has everything I’m looking for and is an excellent price. The only thing that I’m not sure about is the colour. I’ve read the link you sent among other things but still a bit unsure. I have also seen a loose D next to a H and could not see a difference. I might go for an I colour for peace of mind. Ive also read that fluorescence can make a lower colour grade less apparent so am glad you chose one with medium blue fluorescence.

Please could you find an I colour with otherwise the same spec so I can compare the difference in price? Then I think I will make a decision between the ones you have suggested.

Thanks for your help!

Sure, I found this I color diamond for you:
Blue Nile LD07643461

It’s also very well cut and it’s slightly bigger. The difference in price is not big at all. If you’re going to feel more comfortable purchasing an I color diamond, go for it.

Just to let you know I have made a purchase from blue Nile. I didn’t go with either of the ones you suggested in the end but your input was helpful nonetheless. The diamond I chose was a 0.5 carat I SI1 stock code […]. I said I was referred by diamond pro and used the coupon code you gave me.

Thanks for your help.
