Hi, I found the ring in the setting my girlfriend likes. The merchant will sell me the whole ring for $7,495; the ring setting itself (with about .7 in small diamonds in 14k white gold) is $2,470. They would attach-get this-a 1 carat (exactly) G VS2 ring with an excellent cut for $5,025! ($2,470+$5,025 = $7,495)
Here is the GIA report:

Although I can’t see the diamond as I might at James Allen, this does seem like an unusually good deal. Even the girdle proportions seems to check out. The only thing I worry about is the strong blue florescence in the G color, which you advise against.
Please take a look at the report.
Your thoughts?
I would advise against that diamond. It’s poorly cut and strong blue fluorescence is a BIG problem on such a high color grade. It usually causes haziness. I’d stay away. (https://www.diamonds.pro/education/fluorescence/)
I’m happy to help you find a better alternative if you like.
Thanks for your reply.
The cut is “excellent”. How did you gather that it is poorly cut? Please help me understand.
If you can find a diamond like that at that price point, then fine.
55-60% of all round diamonds receive an Excellent cut grade from GIA. So they can have the same grades but there is still a wide range within that quality.
The table % of 61 is too high, the diamond will lose a lot of its brilliance.
I’d go with something like this:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.94-carat-e-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3049571?a_aid=dmnd1357
It’s much better cut and will be much more brilliant.
What do you think?
Thanks very much. How would it look next to smaller G-H SI side stones such as in here?
They have two options, the other being F-G VS. Please click on where it says “side stones” to see.
……
(When I said “how would it look”, I meant in reference to the stone *you* chose for me.)
Both options would be fine. The diamond will still look beautiful and colorless.
