Brilliant Earth vs. Tiffany 2026 Comparison

By Ira Weissman,

If you’re shopping for an engagement ring, you’ve probably come across both Brilliant Earth and Tiffany.

Brilliant Earth designs its own rings, has 40+ stores across the US, and carries one of the largest selections of both natural and lab grown diamonds I’ve seen. Tiffany is a luxury jeweler that sells natural diamonds only, in a smaller group of rings. If you’ve already decided you want a lab grown stone, only Brilliant Earth offers one. If you haven’t decided between natural and lab grown yet, Brilliant Earth lets you compare both in one place.

I’ve been in this business for over 25 years. I’ve spent a lot of time on both websites. Here’s my honest take on how they compare and which one I’d go with if I were buying a ring today.

Bottom Line Up Front

Brilliant Earth is my recommendation for most buyers. Here’s why.

Brilliant Earth carries natural and lab grown diamonds with reports from independent labs such as GIA and IGI. Brilliant Earth designs its own settings at a San Francisco studio, so you get styles you can’t buy anywhere else. And Brilliant Earth has 40+ stores where you can work one on one with a jewelry specialist and see the ring before you buy.

Tiffany sells natural diamonds only, and each diamond comes with a certificate Tiffany writes itself. Its engagement ring page lists 52 items, and that count includes band rings and men’s rings. If the Tiffany name matters most to you, that is your call. But for most buyers, Brilliant Earth gives you more choice and more value for the money.

The difference comes down to range. Tiffany covers natural diamonds under one famous name. Brilliant Earth covers natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds, original design, and a store network you can visit.

In the sections below I explain why.

Here’s What We’ll Cover

Which Has Better Ring Designs and Selection?

Brilliant Earth designs its rings with an award-winning team in San Francisco. That team has won more than 20 design awards. The result is original settings you won’t find at other stores, in styles that include vintage-inspired, nature-inspired, solitaire, halo, and three-stone.

So how many rings can you really choose from? Brilliant Earth has hundreds of settings, and you can pair them with any of 11 diamond shapes. That list includes oval, radiant, marquise, asscher, and old mine. Metals include platinum and 14K or 18K yellow, white, and rose gold.

Take the Willow Diamond Ring. It is a nature-inspired setting that starts at $990 in 14K white gold, before you add a center stone. It also comes in 18K white gold, 14K and 18K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, and platinum. Want something nobody else has? Brilliant Earth also offers a Design Your Own tool and a custom design team.

Tiffany built its name on one design, the Tiffany Setting, a six-prong solitaire the company introduced in 1886. When I checked, Tiffany’s engagement ring page listed 52 items, and that count includes band rings and men’s rings. The shape filter shows round, cushion, oval, emerald, heart, pear, and princess, plus the Tiffany True cut. It does not include radiant, marquise, or asscher. Metals are platinum and 18K yellow or rose gold.

Advantage: Brilliant Earth for more settings, more shapes, and more metal choices.

Diamond Choices and Certification

Brilliant Earth carries natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds, so you can pick the type that fits your budget and your values. Brilliant Earth also offers gemstones, colored diamonds, and moissanite as center stones. If you want a sapphire or a Malibu Blue lab grown diamond instead of a white diamond, that option is there.

An independent lab report (also called a grading report) is a document from a lab that has no stake in the sale. It lists a diamond’s cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Brilliant Earth diamonds come with reports from independent labs such as GIA and IGI. Brilliant Earth also has a guide on IGI vs. GIA if you want to know the difference.

Why does that matter? Because you can check the stone’s grades against a neutral source. Brilliant Earth also shows 360° images of individual diamonds, which helps you spot inclusions before you buy.

Tiffany sells natural diamonds only. If a lab grown diamond is what fits your budget, Tiffany does not offer one in its engagement rings. Each Tiffany ring comes with a Tiffany Diamond Certificate, which Tiffany issues itself. On the ring page, you choose ranges for color, clarity, and carat weight instead of picking one specific stone.

Advantage: Brilliant Earth for more diamond choices and reports from independent labs.

What Is the Shopping Experience Like?

Brilliant Earth has 40+ stores across the US, from Beverly Hills to Brooklyn. Visits are by appointment, and you work one on one with a jeweler. The engagement ring appointment runs 50 minutes.

If you would rather shop from your couch, Brilliant Earth has virtual appointments and a ring builder that pairs any setting with any stone. There is also a virtual try-on tool and jewelry specialists available 24/7. That means you can do your research at midnight on your phone, then try on rings in a store the next weekend.

Tiffany sells through its own stores and its website. Tiffany also has a Ring Studio for customizing rings. If you want a larger stone, the ring page asks you to contact a Tiffany Diamond Expert instead of choosing one online.

Advantage: Brilliant Earth for more ways to shop and a full ring build you can finish online.

Sourcing and Sustainability

Brilliant Earth created the Beyond Conflict Free® standard for natural diamonds. The Kimberley Process is the basic industry rule, and it only screens out diamonds that fund rebel wars. Brilliant Earth goes further. Its standard covers five areas. Diamonds are not used to finance civil wars. They are free of human rights abuses. They come from fair labor practices and are mined with care for the environment. And the mines help the local community.

Less than 1% of the world’s natural diamonds meet that bar. Brilliant Earth also has a collection of blockchain-verified diamonds that you can trace from mine to store. And about 99% of Brilliant Earth’s precious metals are repurposed, not newly mined.

If you prefer lab grown diamonds, Brilliant Earth offers a 100% renewable energy collection too.

Tiffany follows the Kimberley Process, which its own diamond guide uses to define conflict-free. For newly sourced diamonds of 0.18 carats and larger, Tiffany shares the country or region of origin. Older stones, which Tiffany calls heritage stones, have no origin information because Tiffany could not trace them when it bought them.

Advantage: Brilliant Earth for a stricter standard that covers both diamonds and metals.

Pricing and Value

Brilliant Earth shows one price. There are no rotating sales that leave you wondering if you got a deal. You choose the center diamond separately from the setting. That means you decide how much of your budget goes to the stone and how much goes to the ring.

Natural and lab grown diamonds both fit in that plan. A lab grown diamond usually costs much less than a natural diamond of the same size. That lets you go bigger or higher in quality. A natural diamond may be the right pick for you, and Brilliant Earth gives you that choice too. Brilliant Earth also offers financing through Affirm and Wells Fargo, subject to credit approval.

Here is a simple way to test it. Pick the grades you want, such as 1 carat, G color, and VS1 clarity. Brilliant Earth shows you each matching stone with its price and a 360° image. Tiffany asks you to choose ranges for color, clarity, and carat weight, and the price reflects the whole ring. That makes it hard to see what you pay for the diamond alone.

Tiffany lists engagement rings with “starting from” prices that include a small diamond, so the final cost depends on the stone you pick. Tiffany does not sell lab grown diamonds, so there is no lower-cost diamond type to choose from.

What are you actually paying for here? In my experience, most of what separates Tiffany from other stores at this level is the name on the box. Brilliant Earth puts more of your budget into the diamond and the design, and lab grown diamonds give you even more room to go bigger. That makes Brilliant Earth the more cost-effective choice for most buyers. Prices change, so check both sites for the exact ring you want.

Advantage: Brilliant Earth for more cost-effective pricing and more ways to fit a budget.

Returns, Warranty, and Reviews

Brilliant Earth offers free shipping both ways and free 30-day returns. Brilliant Earth also includes a free lifetime warranty, a lifetime diamond upgrade, and free 1-year resizing on qualifying designs. One note to keep in mind. Custom orders and resized rings follow different return rules, so read the details before you order. You can see the full list on the We’ve Got You Covered page.

Tiffany also gives you 30 days. Under Tiffany’s US policy, engagement rings under $75,000 can be returned or exchanged. Rings at $75,000 or more can be exchanged but not refunded.

Brilliant Earth has thousands of reviews across Trustpilot, Google, and The Knot. Buyers tend to bring up the designs, the store visits, and the help they got picking a ring. Tiffany has strong name recognition. Before you decide, read recent reviews for both on a third-party site.

Bottom Line: Which Should You Choose?

Here is how the two stack up on the things that matter most when you buy an engagement ring.

Designs: Brilliant Earth has hundreds of original settings and 11 diamond shapes. Tiffany’s engagement ring page lists 52 items and 7 shapes plus its own cut.

Diamonds: Brilliant Earth sells natural and lab grown diamonds with independent lab reports. Tiffany sells natural diamonds with its own certificate.

Shopping: Brilliant Earth gives you 40+ US stores, virtual appointments, and a full online ring builder.

Sourcing: Brilliant Earth holds natural diamonds to the Beyond Conflict Free® standard and uses about 99% repurposed precious metals.

Price: Brilliant Earth shows one clear price, offers natural and lab grown diamonds, and lets you set the split between stone and setting.

If the Tiffany name matters more to you than anything else, that is your call. But if you want more choice, independent lab reports, and a stricter sourcing standard, Brilliant Earth is the better fit. It is also the more cost-effective choice for most buyers. That is why Brilliant Earth is one of my highest-recommended stores, and one of the first places I send readers when they start shopping.
