Brilliant Earth and Ritani are two names that come up often when people shop for an engagement ring online. Both sell natural and lab grown diamonds. Both let you build a ring on their sites. Each one takes a different path to get you there, so the right fit depends on what matters most to you.
Brilliant Earth has its own design team and 40+ stores across the US. Ritani started in 1999 and makes its rings to order in New York. I’ve been in this business for over 25 years, and I’ve spent time on both sites. Here’s how they compare on designs, diamonds, stores, sourcing, and policies, and where I’d point most buyers.
Brilliant Earth is my recommendation for most buyers choosing between these two. Here’s why.
Brilliant Earth carries over 300,000 lab grown diamonds and more than 100,000 natural diamonds. Ritani lists over 90,000 diamonds in total, natural and lab grown combined. That gives you more stones to compare when you’re hunting for a specific shape, color, and clarity.
Brilliant Earth also holds its natural diamonds to the Beyond Conflict Free® standard. That’s Brilliant Earth’s own sourcing rule, and less than 1% of the world’s natural diamonds meet it. Ritani follows the Kimberley Process, an industry system built to keep rebel-war diamonds out of the market. Brilliant Earth’s standard covers that issue and four more, including fair labor and care for the environment.
Finally, Brilliant Earth has 40+ stores where you can walk in and try on rings. Ritani sells online. Ritani offers a free preview with a Ritani Diamond Pro at a private office location, but only on orders of $1,500 or more.
I explain each of these below.
| Category | Brilliant Earth | Ritani |
|---|---|---|
| Designs & Collections | Original settings from a San Francisco design team with 20+ design awards, hundreds of styles, full custom design studio | Thousands of settings, Ring Studio tool, custom requests by phone or form, rings made to order in New York |
| Diamond Selection | 300,000+ lab grown and 100,000+ natural diamonds, GIA or IGI reports, plus natural and lab grown gemstones | 90,000+ diamonds total (natural and lab grown), natural diamonds graded by GIA or AGS, most lab grown diamonds by IGI |
| Shopping Experience | 40+ stores, virtual appointments, ring builder, 360° diamond images | Online. Free preview with a Ritani Diamond Pro at a private office location on orders of $1,500+, weekdays only |
| Sourcing & Sustainability | Beyond Conflict Free® natural diamonds, 99.5% repurposed gold, 96.4% repurposed silver | Kimberley Process, no repurposed metal percentage listed on its About page |
| Returns & Warranty | Free 30-day returns, free shipping both ways, free lifetime warranty, free lifetime diamond upgrade | 30-day returns on rings, 15 days on loose diamonds, lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects |
Brilliant Earth has its own design team in San Francisco. That team has won over 20 design awards. Its settings are ones you won’t find at other stores. Brilliant Earth offers hundreds of engagement ring settings in solitaire, halo, hidden halo, three-stone, vintage, and nature-inspired styles.
Most buyers find their ring without going custom. If you want something no one else has, Brilliant Earth also has a full custom design studio. You work with a designer from the first sketch to the finished ring.
Ritani says it makes every ring to order in its New York studio. Its site lists thousands of settings. It also has a Ring Studio tool, and you can send a custom request by form or phone. That’s a good number of options.
Here’s where the two split. Ritani’s About page doesn’t name a design team or list any design awards. Brilliant Earth gives you original designs from a team with a track record you can check.
Key Takeaway: Brilliant Earth gives you original designs from a team with 20+ design awards, plus a full custom design studio.
Brilliant Earth carries over 300,000 lab grown diamonds and more than 100,000 natural diamonds. Every stone comes with a GIA or IGI report. You can shop natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds side by side on one site. Brilliant Earth also sells natural and lab grown gemstones, so you can build a sapphire or emerald ring in the same place.
Ritani lists over 90,000 diamonds in total. That number covers natural and lab grown stones together. Ritani says GIA or AGS grade its natural diamonds, and IGI grades most of its lab grown diamonds.
Why does the size of the assortment matter? A larger assortment gives you more matches. Say you want an oval, a certain color, and a certain clarity at a set budget. The more stones a store carries, the better your odds of finding one that checks every box.
Brilliant Earth also offers a large group of blockchain-verified diamonds. Brilliant Earth says it has the largest selection of them in the industry. Each one comes with a digital record that traces it from its origin to you.
Key Takeaway: Brilliant Earth has a larger assortment of natural and lab grown diamonds and more ways to trace where a stone came from.
How do you want to buy your ring? For most people, this part of the decision matters more than they expect.
Brilliant Earth has 40+ stores across the US. You book an appointment, then work one on one with a jeweler at your own pace. You can try on settings and look at diamonds next to them. If you’d rather stay home, Brilliant Earth also offers virtual appointments, 360° diamond images, and a ring builder that pairs any setting with any stone.
Ritani is built around its website. It doesn’t run its own stores that I could find. Instead, it offers a free preview through a Ritani Diamond Pro at a private office location.
Here’s how the preview works, based on Ritani’s own page. It’s only open on orders of $1,500 or more. Your order ships to the Ritani Diamond Pro’s private office location first. The Diamond Pro contacts you within 48 hours to set a time. Meetings are generally Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and your preview has to happen within 7 days.
Now compare that to walking into a Brilliant Earth store on a Saturday and trying on rings. Which sounds easier if you work a regular job?
Most people buy an engagement ring once. No matter how good the photos are, holding a ring in your hand is different. Brilliant Earth gives you that choice with no minimum order. Check the store list to see if one is near you.
Key Takeaway: Brilliant Earth has 40+ stores with no minimum order for an appointment, plus virtual appointments if you’d rather shop from home.
This is where the gap is widest.
Brilliant Earth created the Beyond Conflict Free® standard for its natural diamonds. It covers five areas. The diamonds can’t finance civil wars. They’re free of human rights abuses. They’re mined with fair labor practices. They’re mined with care for the environment. And the mines help the local community. Brilliant Earth traces each diamond to specific mine operations. Less than 1% of the world’s natural diamonds qualify.
Ritani says its diamonds, gems, and metals are ethically sourced. It names the Kimberley Process as its standard. That system focuses on one issue, which is diamonds that fund rebel wars. It doesn’t cover labor conditions or the environment. Most stores follow it, so it doesn’t set Ritani apart.
Metals show the same split. Brilliant Earth uses 99.5% repurposed gold and 96.4% repurposed silver, according to its sustainability page. Repurposed gold is gold that was refined before and didn’t come straight from a mine in its first life. Brilliant Earth says any gold that isn’t repurposed is Fairmined. Ritani’s About page calls its metals ethically sourced but doesn’t give a repurposed percentage.
Lab grown diamonds get the same care at Brilliant Earth. It requires its lab grown diamond makers to pass audits for safe working conditions. It also offers three lab grown collections. The Renewable Collection uses diamonds grown, cut, and polished with 100% wind and solar power. The Capture Collection uses CO2 captured before it reaches the air. The Sustainably Rated Collection uses carbon-neutral energy.
So whether you pick natural or lab grown, Brilliant Earth gives you a clear, published standard.
Key Takeaway: Brilliant Earth holds its natural diamonds to a stricter standard, publishes its repurposed metal numbers, and offers lab grown collections with clear energy goals.
Brilliant Earth offers free 30-day returns and free shipping both ways. Every piece of Brilliant Earth fine jewelry comes with a free lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Brilliant Earth also covers the return label when you send a ring in for a warranty check.
On top of that, Brilliant Earth offers a free lifetime upgrade on its natural and lab grown diamonds. You can trade up to a bigger stone down the road. Details are on the Brilliant Earth warranty and upgrade page. The 30-day return page explains how returns work.
Ritani gives you 30 days to return rings and jewelry. It sends a free FedEx label. For loose diamonds, the window is 15 days from delivery. If you add the stone to a setting, that window grows to 30 days. Ritani also offers a lifetime warranty that covers manufacturing defects.
The 15-day window on loose diamonds is worth a close look. If you buy a stone first and take your time picking a setting, the clock keeps running. Ritani warns about this on its own returns page.
Key Takeaway: Brilliant Earth offers free shipping both ways, a free lifetime diamond upgrade, and free return labels on warranty checks.
For most buyers, Brilliant Earth covers more ground than Ritani.
Brilliant Earth designs its own settings, and its design team has won over 20 awards. Brilliant Earth carries more than 400,000 natural and lab grown diamonds, while Ritani lists over 90,000. Brilliant Earth holds its natural diamonds to the Beyond Conflict Free® standard, and Ritani follows the Kimberley Process. And Brilliant Earth has 40+ stores, so a ring is easy to see and try on in person.
Ritani is an online jeweler that makes its rings to order in New York. If you plan to shop only online and you’re comfortable with a smaller selection, it’s a way to build a ring. Just read the return window on loose diamonds before you buy.
When I add it all up, Brilliant Earth is one of my highest-recommended stores. It’s one of the first places I send readers when they’re ready to start shopping.
